Bucs complete sweep of local district rivals, win 29th consecutive game

SULPHUR – In the last week, the top-ranked Barbe Bucs swept both its local district rivals, extended its win streak to 29 games, and won the program’s 30th district championship.
The Bucs (29-1, 12-0), the No. 1 team in the Non-select Division I power rankings, beat No. 6 Sulphur (22-9, 8-4) 4-2 on Saturday at McMurry Park to sweep the series after winning another close game Thursday, 2-1. Barbe swept No. 4 Sam Houston 4-2 and 8-1 on March 28 and 31.
After throwing nine pitches Thursday to pick up a save in the first game of the series, J.D. Alexander went six innings on Saturday with three strikeouts and three walks. He held the Tors to one run on five hits. Lawton Little pitched the seventh inning to earn a save.
The Bucs struck first in the opening inning when Myles LeDoux scored on Jordin Griffin’s sacrifice bunt. Griffin was safe at first after a Tor error, but the Bucs couldn’t add to their lead.
The Tors responded in the bottom of the second inning when B Baker brought home B Beddoe on a two-out single to right field.
The tie held until the Bucs’ Haden Heath hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
The Tors tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Dalton Shirley hit an RBI single with one out. The Tors had two runners on base with two outs, but Littleton induced a groundout to end the game.
Sulphur’s Brock Trahan was hit with the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in five innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Tors host Sam Houston (22-8, 8-4) on Tuesday, then travel to the Broncos on Thursday before closing out the regular season on Saturday at home against Vinton (15-8), the No. 2 team in Non-select Division IV.
Barbe will play four games in the final week of the regular season, starting with a road game at Southside (19-11, 7-5) on Tuesday. They host Southside on Thursday, then Grace Christian (25-2), the No. 3 team in Class B, in a doubleheader on Friday.
