MANKATO, Minn. — The Minnesota State Mavericks (23-13, 10-2 NSIC) delivered an impressive showing in a doubleheader against the Sioux Falls Cougars (19-16, 7-3 NSIC) at the Maverick All-Sports Dome on Friday, April 3, recording two shutouts with an 8-0 win in game one and a 3-0 victory in game two.

Game 1 | Minnesota State 8, Sioux Falls 0

Minnesota State broke open a scoreless game with a dominant seven-run fourth inning while limiting Sioux Falls to just two hits, securing its fourth shutout of the season. The rally began with a double to right field from senior Gianna Lara. Ysabel Lerma, pinch running for Lara, came around to score on a throwing error.

The offense continued to build as Izzy Hycnar singled to advance Ava Volkmann, who was pinch running for Hannah Tong, to third. Maddie Helin was then hit by a pitch to bring in another run. Ireland Broderick followed with a double down the left field line, clearing the bases with three RBIs. Shortstop Chloe Brandt added to the inning with a groundout that scored Broderick, while a double from Finley Anderson and Lara reaching on an error pushed another run across to make it 7-0.

In the seventh, Tong capped the scoring with her seventh home run of the season to secure the 8-0 win.

Junior Maddie Oetzmann turned in a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits over seven innings while striking out three and walking one. Oetzmann threw 91 pitches, 63 for strikes, and faced 23 batters.

Offensively, Tong recorded an RBI with her home run, while Broderick led the way with three RBIs, a double, and two hits. Hycnar added a hit, a run, and six assists defensively.

Game 2 | Minnesota State 3, Sioux Falls 0

The Mavericks continued their strong play in game two, securing their fifth shutout of the season behind a complete-game performance from freshman Jorey Fry, who allowed just three hits across seven innings.

MSU struck early in the first inning as Brandt led off with a single and Anderson followed with a walk. After Lara reached to load the bases, Hycnar delivered a single to right center, driving in both Brandt and Anderson to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

The game remained tight through the middle innings before Minnesota State added insurance in the seventh. Carly Kimmes tripled to right center and later scored on a groundout by Brandt to extend the lead to 3-0.

Fry was dominant in the circle, facing 27 batters and throwing 105 pitches, including 59 strikes. Fry recorded four strikeouts while inducing eight groundouts and seven flyouts.

Offensively, Hycnar led with two RBIs and six assists, while Tong added two hits, including a double. Kimmes contributed a triple and a run scored.

“I think we had good discipline and adjustments at the plate,” said head coach Kristle Wolcott. “Defensively Hycnar was stellar at third in both contests. Both Oetzmann and Fry had great command of their pitches to keep batters off balance.”

Minnesota State returns to action at home against No. 22-ranked Winona State on Tuesday, April 7, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at the MSU Softball Complex.
