Uhhhhh what happened??? Did the game give me mercy or something?? What happened to the doppelghasts?

I was very low on ammo and came underprepared (because I'm stupid and didn't read what the trial was so I entered it with no ammo, very smart me!) and I was running low on ammo and the doppleghasts just randomly died??
