History

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas softball team claimed its ASUN series against Austin Peay with a win on Saturday, scoring ten runs en route to a 10-4 victory over the Governors at Natalie Shock Stadium.

The Bears improved to 23-13 overall and 5-3 in ASUN games with the win, and have now claimed two of three ASUN series to start the conference slate. Renee Christian added to her hitting streak, now at 23-straight games, and Addie Graham reached base for the 29th game in a row. Lucy Crowder picked up the win in the circle, tossing the complete game and striking out three.

Austin Peay did half of its damage in the first inning, hitting a bases loaded double to score two runs right off the bat. Central Arkansas was able to escape without allowing any further damage, but couldn’t get anything back in the bottom of the first.

The Bears struck back in a big way in the third, however. Grace Molitor opened the frame getting plunked, and Christian walked to put two on base. Graham reached on a fielder’s choice, and a throwing error allowed Molitor to score. Trinity Brandon cleared everything up on the next plate appearance, blasting a home run to right center, giving Central Arkansas a 4-2 lead.

The same order added a fifth run in the next inning, with Molitor singling and advancing on a groundout to get into scoring position. Then, on another groundout, Molitor was able to sprint all the way around from second, putting the Bears up 5-2. Austin Peay responded with another pair of runs in the top of the fifth, cutting the lead down to one.

In the sixth, the Bears put any doubt about the outcome of the game to rest. Gracie St. Hilaire came in to pinch hit with one out and drew a walk. Molitor singled to move the runner 60 feet to second. Christian recorded her hit to get aboard, and a throwing error by Austin Peay allowed all three runners to advance some more, with Christian ending up on third, and two runs being put on the board. Graham doubled to send Christian home from third, and she moved to third on Brandon’s single. Brandon stole second to put both runners in scoring position, and Emma Robertson finished the scoring with a single through the right side.

The Bears and Governors have one more game to play this weekend, taking place tomorrow at 1 p.m.
