Actress Sonia Walger, best known for playing Penny Widmore in “Lost” as well as more recently a role on Apple TV’s “For All Mankind,” has joined the cast of Amazon’s “God of War” live-action TV series.
Walger will take on the recurring role of Freya, an exiled Vanir goddess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, who now lives as a recluse in a hidden glade in Midgard.
She marks the last major role of the series to be cast, though some smaller parts like Tyr, Faye and Athena remain.
The cast currently includes Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Evelyn Miller as Gna, Ben Chapple as Magni, Louis Cunningham as Modi, and Island Austin as Thrud.
The series has received a two-season order at Amazon, with pre-production now underway in Vancouver.
The series sees father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his 10-year-old son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Outlander”) serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
