What was expected to be a big celebration for the launch of Alex in Street Fighter 6 last week ended up going a different direction with the odd controversy of his marriage to Patricia in the story.
Now, Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama has released a statement apologizing for the confusion surrounding Alex’s story while revealing an update is coming to refine certain aspects to the game and releasing a supplemental addition to the development to try and provide more context.
“We apologize for any confusion that recent topics regarding Alex’s story may have caused, said Nakayama in his X post. “While we have not changed the characters’ backstories, after internal review by the development team, we plan to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future.”
“Additionally, we have published a supplementary episode on ‘Buckler’s Boot Camp’ to provide further insight into the characters’ emotions and backstories.”
The Director also shared a new text episode to go with Street Fighter 6’s story featuring Tom discussing Alex and Patricia after their wedding with a bartender written by the scenario team responsible for the World Tour mode.
This all comes following many fans’ reactions to feeling uncomfortable with Alex and Patricia’s relationship, especially after seeing some of the artwork and story text attached to the development.

Back in Street Fighter 3, Alex’s story began with him as an orphan under the care of Tom, who was then said to be a friend of his father’s, who also had Patricia as his biological daughter.
There’s a handful of reasons connected to that, though, which made the new pairing much more controversial than Capcom was probably expecting for a handful of reasons.
The first is the debate over whether Tom’s relationship with Alex was that of an adoptive father or more of a guardian where the former would imply that Alex and Patricia are adoptive siblings who were raised as a family.
Said family connection was seemingly backed up by SF6’s World Tour story where Alex says this at one point:
“He’s my trainer, my manager, my adoptive dad… No, he is my dad.”
That compounded with an old Street Fighter 3 developer interview where they stated “there is no doubt that his real family is Tom and Patricia.”
On top of that, Capcom made an apparent strange addition to their background too by revealing that Tom is also the cousin of Alex’s mother here in Street Fighter 6.
That would also imply that Alex and Patricia are likely also blood related beyond just adoptive siblings, which also makes them second cousins if so.
Some fans were also left uneasy by the imagery included as well, especially in the case of one piece of artwork that featured Alex holding Patricia as a baby next right next to the couple at their wedding — followed by also being pregnant with their child.

This all left a sour taste in the mouth of many fans and arguably overshadowed Alex’s actual character release that left everyone wondering why Capcom went that unnecessary route with one of their prior protagonist and one of their most popular Street Fighter characters.
Hidetoshi “Neo_G” Ishizawa, a notable planner for Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, weighed in on the plot development too showing some surprise in the direction Capcom went with the characters.
Capcom had remained quiet on the subject until now, but they’re attempting to clear the air and do something that we can’t think of any fighting game enacting before like this.
With Nakayama using the word “confusion” about the relationship, this level of controversy doesn’t seem like this presentation was what they were aiming for, so the team is making some changes.
The Director’s statement claims they plan to “revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future,” which should mean an update is in the works to change up how the story played out though the end result will be the same.
He doesn’t specify what exactly they are going to amend, but it’s probably safe to say that the cousin reveal is getting removed along with text implying a prior familial relationship.
Out of all the big fighting games that have been around in the past 35 years, we can’t think of any that released an update to change story content after the fact directly.
There’s certainly been no shortage of retcons in following titles and editions as well as some updated translations for older games being added for rereleases, but not something like changing brand new content in a modern title like this.
Fans had been requesting or joking about wanting story patch notes, and it looks like that’s what they’re going to get soon.
But that said, there are still certainly going to be fans who aren’t down with Alex and Patricia getting together because of the past implications of them being raised as a family going back to the Street Fighter 3 days.
To signal the direction Capcom is wanting to move forward with, the game’s writing team released the special episode of story text mentioned above.
This story focuses on Tom sitting down at a bar talking to a bartender presumably right after Alex and Patricia’s wedding titled ‘A Toast Between Fathers.’
There are still some mentions from the bartender about Alex being Tom’s “son” now, however, they also drive in the point of calling the brawler his “son-in-law” specifically too.
“She’s lucky to have him. You hear that? You got two troublemakers now, and I have a son—the best son in the world!” said Tom.
“You all hear that!? I’ve got the best son-in-law in the world! What more could a father ask for!”
They also have Tom use the phrase “new family” as well to push back against the previous familial implications.
Even if it wasn’t their intention to imply a relationship with such moral quandaries, Capcom was indeed listening to the feedback to the point where they’re actually going to change content because of it.
We don’t expect these content revisions to become a common occurrence moving forward, however, if fans don’t like the direction of stories for characters and games since this situation was more of a special / odd case.
This will still serve as a fascinating moment where the community managed to get a developer to alter the story points of all things in a fighting game.
It’s not stated when the update to revise Alex’s story will come, but hopefully the patch will arrive soon and also fix the performance issues Street Fighter 6 players have been reporting.
Story is developing…
