SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Athletes from across the Suncoast are showing determination on and off the court at the Special Olympics Florida West Coast Regional Summer Games.
Held at IMG Academy, the event drew more than 1,600 athletes competing in seven sports, including bocce and basketball. Organizers say the games are about more than medals — they’re about connection, confidence and celebrating each athlete’s abilities.
From start to finish, athletes cheered for one another throughout the competition.

Kana Brooks, who won first place in tennis, said the experience was both exciting and rewarding.
“My heart is still pumping with a lot of enjoyment and excitement,” Brooks said. “I’m here to play, and I’m here to have fun.”
Longtime coach Judy Moore said the impact of the Special Olympics goes far beyond the competition. After more than 26 years of coaching, she said the athletes continue to inspire her.
“I’ve been doing this for 26 years because I love the athletes, and it’s so rewarding,” Moore said. “It’s exciting to see them get excited. Tennis is for everyone, and they love it. The Special Olympics is the highlight of the whole season.”
The games reflect the mission of Special Olympics Florida: giving athletes of all abilities opportunities to compete, build friendships and shine on and off the field.
