History
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Valley City began Frontier Conference play with two games at the Frontier Conference Round Robin in Sioux Falls. The Vikings split the two games. They defeated Bismarck State 11-1 in eight innings and lost to Dakota State 16-6 in seven innings.
The Vikings are 14-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Bismarck State is 12-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Dakota State is 9-14 overall and 2-0 in the Frontier.
GAME 1: Valley City State 11, Bismarck State 1 F/8
The Mystics got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Karsen Haney singled in Pacey Philips with the first run of the game.
Valley City State got that run back in the bottom of the second. Evan Gonzalez scored on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
The Vikings would then put the game away with a six-run bottom of the third. Cody Wielgosh walked to start the inning. He scored on Alexis Velasco’s double. Velasco then came in on Kaden Rozdeba’s triple to make it 3-1 VCSU. Brady Papineau hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Rozdeba to make it 4-1. With two out, Evan Gonzalez walked. He scored when Mystics left fielder dropped Anthony Madsen’s fly ball, making it 5-1. After Diesel Goya was hit by a pitch, Hunter Logan doubled, scoring Madsen and Goya to make it 7-1 after three.
VCSU got two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Logan to make it 9-1.
A bases loaded walk to Gonzalez in the bottom of the eighth made it 10-1. With the bases still loaded, Papineau scored on a wild pitch to end the game early with VCSU winning 11-1.
Hunter Logan was 2 for 5 with a double and four RBI. Alexis Velasco was 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Kaden Rozdeba was 1 for 4 with a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. Cody Wielgosh and Nicholas Senn were both 1 for 4. Wiegosh scored a run. Evan Gonzalez walked five times and scored three runs on the night. Diesel Goya scored twice and Anthony Madsen scored once.
Conor Martin was solid on the hill for the Vikings. He tossed seven innings, allowed seven hits, one run, with five walks and seven strikeouts. With the win, he improves to 4-2 on the year.
Game 2: Dakota State 16, Valley City State 6 F/7
The Vikings drew first blood with two runs in the top of the second on Evan Gonzalez’s fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence.
Dakota State got those two runs back, and then some, in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back doubles by Cameron Kittridge and Aiden Barfuss tied the game at 2-2. Connor Raney hit a two-run double to give the Trojans the lead for good at 4-2. An RBI single by Aiden Perry made it 5-2. Cameron DeMaria singled in Perry to make it 6-2. George Hogan capped the big inning with a two-run double to make it 8-2 Trojans.
Dakota State added three more in the third. An RBI ground out by Perry, and bases loaded hit-by-pitch of DeMaria, and a sacrifice fly by Hogan made it 11-2 Dakota State after three innings.
Kaden Rozdeba scored on an error for the Vikings in the top of the fourth to make it 11-3.
Dakota State got that run back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Den Boer to make it 12-3.
Vikings plated three runs in the top of the fifth. Wielgosh singled in Diesel Goya, Rozdeba doubled in Wielgosh, and Brady Papineau hit a sacrifice fly to make it 12-6 Trojans.
Dakota State ended the game early with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. A double by Chris Vinson made it 13-6, then DeMaria hit a line drive home run that hit the scoreboard over the right field fence. That made it 16-6 Dakota State.
The Vikings went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Nicholas Senn was 2 for 2 with a double for the Vikings. Evan Gonzalez was 1 for 3 with a home run and two RBI. Kaden Rozdeba was 1 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Cody Wielgosh was 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Alexis Velasco was 1 for 4 with a run. Anthony Madsen was 1 for 3. Brady Papineau had an RBI and Diesel Goya scored once.
UP NEXT: The Vikings continue the conference opening weekend with two more games on Sunday in Sioux Falls. VCSU plays Dickinson State and #4 Bellevue before at the Sanford Sports Complex. Game one with Dickinson State begins at 12:15pm with the Bellevue game to follow.
