Key features of this ASUS ROG Strix 27-inch QHD gaming monitor

QHD and 27-inch display

Pretty much the sweet spot when it comes to resolution and size for maximum picture clarity without the added expense of 4K or, more importantly, one of the best graphics cards on the market. At this size, it’s also extremely versatile, as it’s not too big that it puts you at a competitive disadvantage in first-person shooters, and not too small for everyday usage, like watching movies or productivity.

180Hz, ELMB Sync, and 1ms response time

A potent combination for high refresh rate gaming at QHD, that will ensure that you can game at up to 180fps, but with little in the way of ghosting, screen tearing, or motion blur. For competitive and fast-paced gaming, this is great, but it’s also excellent for games that benefit from smoother motion, such as racing games or even games like Cyberpunk 2077.

DCI-P3 97% and sRGB 133% color

This is very impressive for the price, considering this is primarily marketed as a gaming monitor. In short, DCI-P3 is basically the industry color standard commonly used in modern movie production, so the closer to 100%, the better, specifically if you’re a video editor or want to experience more accurate, lifelike color and picture quality when gaming and watching films. 133% sRGB is a bit gimmicky and unusual to understand, in all honesty, so let me quickly break it down. Games often use sRGB, so 100% is great as it means the monitor can show all the colors as the developers want them to be seen. 133% basically means that the monitor can produce more saturated versions of these colors, which makes games and web content look much more vivid, but sometimes less accurate. In short, great for gaming and making colors pop off the screen, a little weird for design work, where you’ll have to do a little calibrating to ensure accuracy.

Basic HDR

HDR is always found on more affordable QHD monitors, and while it’s not essential if you’re playing only competitive games, where turning HDR on can have an impact on fps and gameplay smoothness, personally, I think it’s better to have it than not have it, even at a low level. This monitor has a DisplayHDR 400 rating, which sounds good, but isn’t top-tier by any means, especially when it comes to deep blacks. It does mean that the monitor gets 400 nits of brightness, though, which is not bad, and explains why the color is quite impressive.

Things to consider

It’s clear to see why this monitor is so popular for the price, but with these more affordable options, they do scale back in certain areas, even though on the surface, they look great. Personally, for something a bit more versatile, but still relatively affordable, I’d suggest looking at some of the lower refresh rate QD-OLED gaming monitors on the market. AOC, in particular, is a very good place to start your search, as it has some solid QD-OLED QHD options at great prices. These are going to have superior contrast and color, but still have everything you need for fast-paced gaming, too. Check out our top gaming monitor deals below to see what’s currently on sale.
