COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The Special Olympics Area 6 Spring Games are set for March 27 and 28, with more than 500 athletes expected to compete across several sports and venues in the area.
Randi Daniel of Special Olympics Texas’ East Region said more than 500 athletes will compete in cycling, track and field, tennis and fundamentals events.
The track meet will be held at Wellburn Middle School. Cycling and fundamentals events will take place at College Station Middle School, and the tennis event will be at Bee Creek Park.
Daniel said organizers are currently in the midrange for volunteer sign-ups and are looking for additional help on both Friday and Saturday, with Saturday the day of greatest need.
“You don’t have to know how to do anything,” Daniel said. “Really just come out and be willing to help is kind of all we ask you to do and to be happy and to share in success.”
Volunteer roles include assembling lunches, working the concession stand, operating a timer, escorting athletes between areas and distributing awards.
For those unable to volunteer, Daniel said community members are encouraged to attend as spectators.
“If you can’t come out and sign up for one of our shifts, then you can always just come out when you can and be a fan in the stands, cheer on the athletes as they’re competing and just be happy and be joyful and enjoy competition,” Daniel said.
